Al Janoub Stadium

Surespan had the privilege of contributing to the development of the Al-Janoub Stadium, formerly known as Al-Wakrah Stadium, a key venue for the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar.

Officially inaugurated on 16 May 2019, this stadium stands as a remarkable achievement in architectural design and engineering, being the second of the eight stadiums developed for the World Cup.

Designed by the esteemed Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid, in collaboration with AECOM, the stadium presents a striking example of curvilinear postmodernist and neo-futurist design.

The roof’s design, inspired by the sails of the traditional Dhow boats significant to the region’s pearl diving heritage, adds a touch of cultural resonance to the structure, seamlessly blending tradition with modernity.

Located in Al-Wakrah, Qatar, Al-Janoub Stadium serves as the official home for the Al-Wakrah SC football club, hosting matches for the Qatar Stars League.
Initially accommodating a capacity of 40,000 spectators for the World Cup, the stadium’s design includes the innovative feature of reducing its capacity to 20,000 post-tournament, reflecting a commitment to sustainable use and legacy planning.

For this significant project, Surespan was tasked with providing eight SRHPE/AOV Aluminium, thermally broken, single leaf, electrically operated roof access hatch/smoke ventilators, each designed to fit a structural opening of 1000 x 1000mm, finished with polyester powder coating.

These units were not only designed for easy access to roof areas for maintenance but also function as essential smoke ventilators, enhancing the safety and functionality of the stadium’s design.

The inclusion of the Surespan SRHPE/AOV units exemplifies our dedication to delivering high-quality, bespoke access and safety solutions.

Each unit, with its thermally broken aluminium construction and electric operation, was engineered to offer seamless integration with the stadium’s sophisticated roof structure, ensuring reliability, ease of use, and aesthetic harmony with the overall design ethos of the stadium.

Surespan’s involvement in the Al-Janoub Stadium project underscores our expertise in providing tailored access solutions that meet the stringent requirements of modern architectural marvels.

Our commitment to innovation, quality, and safety, combined with our ability to address the unique challenges of such high-profile projects, reinforces our position as a leader in the access products industry.
