Burj Khalifa

As a centerpiece of the ambitious 1.5-billion-dollar Downtown Dubai project, the government of Dubai set out to erect the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa.

Soaring 828 meters above the cityscape, this architectural marvel encompasses 162 stories, blending local cultural influences with state-of-the-art technology to withstand the harsh desert climate.

The design, conceived by the renowned architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, draws inspiration from the Hymenocallis flower, synonymous with the region, and the intricate patterns found in Islamic architecture.

In line with the project’s pursuit of innovation and unparalleled engineering, Surespan was selected for its exceptional engineering prowess, creativity, and specialised capabilities. Our brief was to design and manufacture a critical component for the tower, a simulated submarine access hatch. This bespoke solution illustrates our commitment to precision engineering and adaptability in the face of unique challenges.

The product delivered was a 600mm diameter, polish grade 316 stainless steel simulated submarine access hatch with handwheels. Positioned at 816 meters, it provides maintenance access to the building’s aircraft warning lights. This meticulously engineered hatch not only serves a practical maintenance function but also adds to the building’s safety features by ensuring easy access to essential warning systems.

Moreover, its location and design have captured the imagination, notably being used by actor Tom Cruise in a daredevil seated position atop the tower, further cementing the Burj Khalifa’s iconic status.

Surespan supplied a bespoke hydraulically operated double-leaf access cover package for the South Clyde Energy Centre, a major Energy-from-Waste facility under construction in Glasgow.

The project The Centenario Ratones plant is one of the most significant lithium projects in South America. Operated by Eramine Sudamérica S.A. — a joint venture between French mining group Eramet (50.1%) and Chinese steelmaker Tsingshan (49.9%) — the plant uses advanced Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) technology to produce 24,000 tonnes of battery-grade lithium carbonate per year from brine pumped from beneath the salt flat.
