Surespan was approached by California State University, Northridge, to develop a bespoke roof access solution. The university required efficient and safe access to roof areas for maintenance and servicing of roof-mounted equipment.

The project brief specified the need for a comprehensive access package that included a custom-sized roof access hatch, retractable ladder, and an internal ceiling access panel.

The primary goal was to ensure easy, secure access to the roof while maintaining aesthetic and functional integrity within the building.

Surespan designed and fabricated a custom 52-inch square roof hatch, equipped with a retractable ladder suitable for floor-to-ceiling heights up to 11 feet. Key features of the solution included:

Custom Size: The 52-inch x 52-inch dimensions of the roof doors were tailored to meet the specific needs of the university.

Thermal Efficiency: Each hatch was thermally broken and insulated with 2-inch thick insulation, enhancing the building’s energy efficiency.

Concealed Access: A ceiling access panel was integrated within the main corridor below the hatch, designed to discreetly conceal the access route when not in use.

Durability and Weather Resistance: The units were rigorously tested to IP66 standards, ensuring resistance to wind loads, air permeability, and weather tightness, guaranteeing a durable and high-quality product.

Surespan successfully delivered a turnkey roof access solution that met the unique requirements of California State University, Northridge. The custom-designed hatches provide safe, easy, and thermally efficient access to roof areas, supporting the university’s maintenance and servicing needs while blending seamlessly into the architectural fabric of the campus.

South Clyde Energy Centre

Surespan supplied a bespoke hydraulically operated double-leaf access cover package for the South Clyde Energy Centre, a major Energy-from-Waste facility under construction in Glasgow.
