Henriksdal Wastewater Treatment Plant

Surespan supplied heavy-duty stainless steel floor access hatches for the Henriksdal Wastewater Treatment Plant in Stockholm, supporting safe maintenance access across a major underground infrastructure upgrade.

Henriksdal is Stockholm’s primary wastewater treatment facility and a key part of the city’s long-term upgrade programme, expanding capacity and modernising underground infrastructure to meet tighter environmental requirements.

As part of the works, Surespan supplied a coordinated package of heavy-duty, stainless steel flush floor hatches and safety grids to support safe maintenance access across multiple areas of the site, including large structural openings and high-duty service zones.

Products supplied (selected)

  • Grade 304 stainless steel flush floor access covers in multiple formats, including large triple-leaf lift-out units providing clear openings up to 5000 x 2000 mm, recessed for concrete infill and designed for slow moving wheel loads, with acoustic board specified on selected units.
  • Hydraulic-operated access covers (double-leaf, Grade 304 stainless steel), including units for 1000 x 2000 mm openings rated for an 11 tonne wheel load, with insulation to the underside and supplied with a hand pump and safety grids.
  • Fire-rated floor access where required, including FR60 specifications on selected covers.
  • Pressure-rated hatch configurations incorporating additional removable hold-down bolts to satisfy 50 kPa water pressure from below on specified units.
  • Safety grids (hinged and lift-out variants) designed to support 5 kN/m² loads, with lifting accessories specified to suit safe handling and servicing.

Key features

The access covers were specified with details suited to a wastewater treatment environment, including stainless steel construction for durability, EPDM sealing, water management detailing, recessed pans for site-applied infill, secure hold-down systems, and safe operation features such as gas spring assistance and hold-open stays where required.

Outcome

By supplying a consistent range of high-duty access covers, including large-format lift-out units, acoustic-rated options, hydraulic-operated covers, and pressure-rated configurations, Surespan supported safe maintenance access and robust long-life detailing within a complex underground wastewater upgrade in Stockholm.
