HS2 Euston Station

London Euston is experiencing a transformative evolution as part of the High Speed 2 (HS2) initiative, with plans to become a more prominent high-speed railway terminus.

This ambitious project, now budgeted at around £4.8 billion, up from the initial £2.6 billion, aims to equip the station with six platforms dedicated to HS2 services, connecting to Birmingham and beyond.

A significant aspect of the redesign is the UK’s largest concourse, a 300-metre hall envisioned to streamline passenger flow and enhance the overall visitor experience, further accentuated by introducing new public spaces.

The architectural highlight includes a geometric roof structure purposefully designed to optimise natural light within the concourse, thereby elevating the aesthetic and functional quality of the station environment.

Moreover, the upgrade extends its benefits to the existing Network Rail and London Underground stations, focusing on substantial improvements to passenger amenities and the journey experience.

We played a pivotal role in this significant upgrade in partnership with Deltamin, a renowned construction company specialising in delivering superior projects across various sectors, including transport and energy.

Our contribution centred around supplying an extensive range of Surespan HLIAC/FR120/DL fire-rated recessed floor hatches designed to meet the precise specifications required for this project. The hatches, available in sizes ranging from 1730 x 2130mm to 2530 x 3530mm, are engineered for a distributed load of 10kN/m², ensuring durability and safety. Manufactured from Grade 304 Stainless Steel, each hatch incorporates a hinge safety grid, enhancing operational safety and compliance. The hatches are uniquely operated by a hand pump mounted on a trolley, facilitating double-acting opening and closing mechanisms for ease of use.

Additionally, a 30mm recess accommodates any infill, offering flexibility in application and integration within the station’s design schema. Importantly, these hatches are rated for up to 4 hours of fire resistance (from the underside only), underscoring our commitment to safety and reliability.

Through this collaboration, Surespan has underscored its capability to contribute to major infrastructure projects, delivering bespoke access solutions that align with the visionary goals of the HS2 project at London Euston. This endeavour not only showcases our expertise in engineering high-quality, fire-rated access products but also our dedication to enhancing the infrastructure of critical transportation hubs, supporting the UK’s ambition to modernise its rail network and improve passenger experiences across the board.
