National Oilwell Varco

At Surespan, we pride ourselves on delivering innovative solutions tailored to the unique needs of our clients. In a recent collaboration, we had the opportunity to work with National Oilwell Varco (NOV), a leader in providing technology-driven solutions for the global energy industry.

With a rich history spanning over 150 years, NOV is renowned for pioneering advancements that not only enhance oilfield operations but also contribute to the sustainability of energy production. Our project with NOV’s Dunfermline factory in Scotland underscores our commitment to addressing industry challenges through bespoke engineering solutions.

The NOV Dunfermline facility faced significant operational constraints due to the limited height within the building, impeding the construction of tall manifold assemblies. This limitation threatened the continuity of operations, potentially necessitating the temporary relocation of production activities.

Understanding the critical nature of the challenge, our experienced design team engaged closely with NOV to develop a practical and efficient solution. The result was the creation of a large, bespoke double roof hatch that directly addressed the factory’s spatial constraints.

Measuring 14 feet by 14 feet, these custom-designed double leaf hatches allowed for the external crane to facilitate the movement of manifold units through the roof, eliminating the need for NOV to seek alternative premises.

Our solution was not only functional but also engineered to withstand the specific environmental conditions of the site. The hatches are equipped with an innovative strut locking mechanism, ensuring they remain securely open even under adverse wind conditions. Additionally, the hatches are automated, controlled by a small PLC system that operates them in a sequence at the turn of a key, enhancing operational efficiency and safety.

This project exemplifies Surespan’s dedication to solving complex industry problems through tailored design and manufacturing. By partnering with NOV, we were able to ensure the continuation of critical operations within the existing infrastructure, thereby supporting our client’s mission to produce energy sustainably and efficiently.

Our success with the NOV Dunfermline factory project stands as a testament to our expertise in creating bespoke solutions that meet the evolving needs of the energy sector.
