Royal College of Music

In a prestigious refurbishment project for the Royal College of Music, entitled More Music: Reimagining the Royal College of Music, Surespan played a pivotal role in enhancing the facility's safety and aesthetic appeal.

The project’s goal was to transform the college’s spaces into dynamic, state-of-the-art environments conducive to music creation, research, and performance. It included the addition of new public areas, such as a café bar and restaurant, performance spaces, and a modernised Royal College of Music Museum.

Within this extensive renovation, Surespan was tasked with the design and manufacture of three HIAC Recessed Floor Hatches, each measuring 79 inches by 39 inches.

Positioned strategically in the courtyard adjacent to the new café bar, these hatches were ingeniously integrated into a smoke vent system. This design ensures that in the event of a fire, the hatches automatically open in conjunction with the activation of smoke vents in the plant room below. This system is pivotal in allowing smoke to escape and creating a safe evacuation route from the building.

The hatches supplied by Surespan boast a 1-hour fire rating and a 48 dB sound rating. The latter is particularly significant in this context, as it aids in preventing sound leakage into the courtyard, ensuring that the serene atmosphere of the Royal College of Music’s new spaces remains undisturbed. This thoughtful consideration underlines Surespan’s commitment to providing solutions that not only meet safety standards but also contribute to the overall quality of the project’s new spaces.
