The project’s objectives are comprehensive, aiming to convert Waitematā Station into a two-way through station to increase train traffic into the city significantly, support Auckland’s burgeoning population and economic growth with a state-of-the-art rapid transit system, and cut journey times within the city centre to make public transport an appealing choice for commuters. Additionally, the CRL is set to catalyse urban renewal, offering new housing and commercial opportunities, cultural expression, and creating more welcoming spaces around Auckland. A unique aspect of the CRL is its dedication to reflecting Auckland’s cultural identity, notably through the design of its stations and the realisation of New Zealand’s largest public art project.
With an expected capacity to transport up to 27,000 passengers per hour during peak times, the CRL is a pivotal development for Auckland’s infrastructure, poised to spur social and economic growth and enhance employment opportunities within the city’s commercial hub.
In this significant project, Surespan’s role was to supply over 20 HIAC/FR120 recessed floor hatches crafted from stainless steel to ensure durability and longevity. These hatches, provided in sizes of 600 x 600mm, 1000 x 1000mm, and 614 x 570mm, were designed with a 40mm recess to seamlessly accommodate any type of infill, aligning with the project’s aesthetic and functional requirements. Engineered to withstand pedestrian loading and boasting a 2-hour fire rating, these hatches are a testament to Surespan’s commitment to safety, functionality, and design excellence.
