Killeen Elementary School

Surespan played a pivotal role in the development of the new East/West Ward Elementary School in Killeen, Texas.

This project, architected by Huckabee, aimed to merge two 60-year-old campuses into a single, modern learning environment. The design ethos centred around efficiency, functionality, and navigability, ensuring spaces were easy to traverse, classrooms modernised, and natural light maximised through strategic glazing.

The East/West Ward Elementary School is a testament to blending district design standards with forward-thinking architecture to create spatially efficient and equitable learning environments.

For this project, Surespan supplied five 35.5-inch x 35.5-inch Fire Rated Roof Hatches, each equipped with an integral guard hand railing. These hatches are noted for their thermal break and have been rigorously tested for 4-hour fire resistance, conforming to EN 1634-1:2014 standards.

The hatches utilise environmentally friendly materials, including non-combustible mineral and fireboard cladding. This choice not only enhances thermal efficiency but also aligns with sustainability goals.

Finished in a light grey polyester powder coating, the hatches offer an aesthetically pleasing solution that complements the school’s design. The durable coating ensures longevity, mirroring the building’s masonry veneer in maintaining the facility’s appearance and functionality over time.

Surespan’s bespoke fire rated roof hatches significantly contribute to the safety, sustainability, and aesthetic appeal of the East/West Ward Elementary School. This collaboration underscores Surespan’s commitment to delivering high-quality, innovative solutions tailored to the unique needs of educational environments. The project exemplifies how thoughtful design and specification can create conducive learning spaces that serve communities for years to come.
