Marina East Desalination Plant

Surespan collaborated with Breen International Pte. Ltd., a renowned Singapore-based distributor specialising in engineering products and services for utilities and infrastructure, on the Keppel Marina East Desalination Plant (KMEDP) project.

This innovative facility stands out as Singapore’s first dual-mode desalination plant, capable of processing seawater from the Singapore Straits and stormwater from the Marina Reservoir.

With a daily production capacity of 137,000 cubic metres of fresh drinking water, KMEDP is pivotal in reinforcing Singapore’s water security strategy. Unique in its design, the desalination plant is constructed entirely underground to minimise its environmental impact and maintain the city’s “garden city” aesthetic.

Above it, a 20,000-square-metre green roof serves as a public recreational space, seamlessly integrating with the Eastern Coastal Park Connector Network and contributing to both urban sustainability and community well-being.

Surespan provided SAC marine-grade aluminium, single-leaf, electronically operated, flush floor access hatches for this groundbreaking project. These hatches were designed to fit a structural opening of 4000mm x 1400mm, each equipped with an internal single-line handrail fitted inside the lid for enhanced safety. The operation of these access solutions is managed through an SP1185/C control panel, supporting 230V-24V for single-leaf access hatches with synchronised actuators. Additionally, an SP1165 push-button up/down selector switch, rated IP54, ensures user-friendly access control.

To further enhance accessibility and convenience, wireless remote controls with key fobs were also provided, allowing for effortless operation of the hatches. This feature underscores the commitment to incorporating advanced technology and user-centric design in infrastructure projects.

Surespan’s involvement in the Keppel Marina East Desalination Plant project highlights our expertise in delivering high-quality, bespoke access solutions for complex and significant infrastructure developments. By providing innovative and sustainable access products, we contribute to the facility’s efficiency and functionality, ensuring safe and secure access for maintenance and operational needs. This project exemplifies our dedication to excellence and innovation, supporting Singapore’s vision for water sustainability and urban green spaces.
