Zayed National Museum

The Zayed National Museum tells the story of the UAE through six permanent galleries, complemented by temporary and outdoor exhibition spaces located in the heart of the Saadiyat Cultural District. Behind the scenes, complex buildings rely on safe and reliable maintenance access. To support the project, Surespan utilised our UAE distribution network, providing fire-rated, flush access solutions and large-format access where required.

The images show the museum’s setting within the wider Saadiyat Cultural District and the scale of the building. Our scope centred on safe, discreet access for maintenance teams, using fire-rated flush access points to support movement between service zones while preserving the architectural finish above

Scope: FR60 and FR120 flush floor access hatches (with safety and anti-slip options), plus a large-format electrically operated double-leaf floor access hatch (FR60).

FR60 stainless steel flush floor access hatches

Surespan supplied HIAC/FR60 flush floor access hatches in Grade 316 / 316L stainless steel, sized to suit multiple structural openings and configured for safe, predictable use:

  • FR60 integrity to BS EN 1634-1 and BS EN 1363-1 (as documented)
  • Gas spring assistance with safety hold-open stay
  • FACTA Class A pedestrian loading where stated
  • Self-draining design with drainage connection provision
  • Slam-action cab lock with removable tee key, access from both sides where specified
  • Hidden-hinge frame with smoke seal
  • Powder coating where required for finish coordination

Anti-slip and smaller access points

Where specified, lids were supplied with anti-slip coating to keep performance consistent across different hatch sizes.

Large-format electrically operated double-leaf floor access hatch (FR60)

For larger maintenance access, Surespan supplied a double-leaf, electrically operated assembly:

  • Sequenced operation using 24V DC actuators
  • Control provision including battery back-up capability (as specified)
  • Key switch control for managed access
  • Sectional supply where required to support handling and transport

FR120 stainless steel flush floor access hatches

Where higher fire performance was required, Surespan supplied HIAC/FR120 units with safety-led details:

  • FR120 integrity to BS EN 1634-1 and BS EN 1363-1 (as documented)
  • Mechanical strut assistance and hold-open stay
  • Recessed pan lids for site-applied infill where specified
  • Internal safety grids with detachable chains where specified
  • Self-draining and secure locking consistent with the HIAC design

South Clyde Energy Centre

Surespan supplied a bespoke hydraulically operated double-leaf access cover package for the South Clyde Energy Centre, a major Energy-from-Waste facility under construction in Glasgow.

Centenario Ratones Lithium Plant

SRHE/50/DL electrically operated double-leaf roof access hatches (5000 x 5500mm structural opening), with electrical control boxes, battery back-up, key switch controls, painted finish, removable lifting eyes, spare actuators, and 5 days supervisory installation attendance. The project The Centenario Ratones plant is one of the most significant lithium projects in South America. Operated by Eramine Sudamérica S.A. — a joint venture between French mining group Eramet (50.1%) and Chinese steelmaker Tsingshan (49.9%) — the plant uses advanced Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) technology to produce 24,000 tonnes of battery-grade lithium carbonate per year from brine pumped from beneath the salt flat.
