Lusail Stadium

Surespan proudly contributed to the development of the Lusail Stadium, a crowning achievement in Qatar's preparation for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

As the largest stadium in both Qatar and the Middle East, with an impressive capacity of 88,966, Lusail Stadium stands as a monumental venue for international football.

Designed by the world-renowned architecture firms Foster + Partners and Populous, the stadium was officially opened on 9 September 2022 and is owned by the Qatar Football Association. Positioned in Lusail, Qatar, this stadium is a centrepiece for the World Cup and a landmark in architectural excellence and sustainable design.

For this iconic project, Surespan was tasked with supplying bespoke access solutions aligned with the stadium’s innovative design and stringent safety requirements. We delivered an extensive array of SLH/50 thermally broken, aluminium, single leaf, manually operated sliding roof access hatches. These were specifically designed to fit a structural opening of 1900 x 1100mm, with the lids engineered to slide along the length (1900mm) on runners installed on the roof. This design choice ensured that the access hatches would seamlessly integrate with the stadium’s sophisticated roof structure, providing essential access with minimal aesthetic disruption.

A key feature of our solution was the inclusion of the Surespan ‘SureGuard’ system, which adds an extra layer of safety to the roof access points. This system comprises a permanent double-line guard rail, standing 850mm high and surrounding all four sides of each hatch. Additionally, it includes a spring-loaded gate, further enhancing safety for maintenance staff and operational personnel by preventing accidental falls.

Surespan’s involvement in the Lusail Stadium project underscores our expertise in delivering high-quality, customized access solutions for large-scale sporting venues. Our commitment to engineering excellence, combined with our attention to safety and aesthetics, enabled us to meet the specific needs of this prestigious project. By providing innovative and reliable access products, we ensured the Lusail Stadium not only meets but exceeds the highest international standards of design, functionality, and safety.

This case study exemplifies Surespan’s capability to work on significant, high-profile projects, demonstrating our ability to tackle unique challenges and deliver superior solutions. It highlights our expertise in the access products industry. It reaffirms our position as a leader in designing and manufacturing bespoke access solutions for the world’s most iconic buildings and venues. Through the Lusail Stadium project, Surespan has once again showcased its commitment to excellence and its contribution to the legacy of global sporting events.
